My ecological footprint is HUGE!!! ...

After taking the ecological footprint quiz, I knew I have to blog about it. This is crazy!!! Personally, I have always been considering myself to be someone who is very environmental-friendly. I recycle the majority of my "stuffs" like bottles, cans and paper. I eat fruits and vegetables whenever I can, which is like two or three servings a day. I cut out as much processed food as possible. Yet, my food acres are quiet big... Ok, it's huge! I carpool 96% of the time so it shows in the result of less than one acre. YAY!!! Shelter and goods/services are also big, each takes four acres, adding up to my footprint of 13 acres in total!!! Comparing to the average footprint in America, mine is quiet small, which I am very proud of. However, that still doesn't hide the fact that it would take 2.8 planets if everyone live like I do. Apparently, there is only one Earth so I can't afford to live like that. I guess it's time for a change. Based on "Stuff", I can become a vegetarian, take the bus or bike to Highline, reuse and recycle everything that I can. Surprisingly, that doesn't sound as difficult as I thought...Worth a shot!

On to the commute cost... My estimate cost of commuting for a month is about 267 dollars and about 3207 dollars a year. However, if I carpool with one person, it will cut the price down to about 1603 dollars yearly. If I vanpool with 6 other people for 5 days a week: $514. Ride the bus 1-zone: $594. Ride the bus 2-zone: $990. Compress workweek down to 4 days: $2565.60. Best of all, work at home: $0.00. It is amazing to see how much money I can save by using different alternatives to driving. That sure motivates people like me to do something about the way they commute daily. However, I don't have access to lots of these alternatives like working at home or compressing my workweek. In the end, I think it's all about getting out of my comfort zone and start living greener and wiser.

In the last quiz, my estimate annual electricity usage is about 45,872 kWh. The amount of greenhouse gas (CO2) we produce a year is 17,706 lbs, Nitrogen Oxides is 22 lbs, Sulfur Dioxide is 8 lbs, and mercury is about 145 millgrams. I was shocked by the result because my family is genereally careful about our electricity usage. We turn off our lights when we don't use them. We don't left the computers on overnight, either. Yet, the amount of CO2 my family alone produced yearly is so high. This makes me feel a little defeated because we are doing what we can and yet, it still isn't enough. How much will it take to make a difference?
